Here’s a little something that may surprise you: the Jubilee line is the only Tube line that connects with all other Underground lines—except the Waterloo & City. (Because of course there’s one maverick that refuses to play along.) Also, the extension cost about £3.5 billion—which in 1990s money was absolutely eye-watering. Critics called it a white elephant. Today, it’s hard to imagine East London without it.

And you want irony? The station at Westminster on the Jubilee line is built so deep that it required a 40-metre-deep excavation. That’s deeper than most swimming pools are long. (Which means if you take the escalator and feel like you’re descending into the earth’s core, you’re not wrong.)
