If you want to destroy the colony, bait stations are your best bet. The ants take the poison back to the nest and feed it to the queen. It takes a few days, so patience is key. But it’s the only method that actually kills the root of the problem.
I use gel baits from a hardware store—stuff that looks like honey. The ants go crazy for it. Just be sure to place them near the nest, not on the ant highway itself. You want them to find it, not just pass by it. And keep them away from pets, obviously.
