Why are they called “snow” crabs? Because their meat turns snow white when cooked. It’s not marketing. It’s science.
Also, they’re mostly legs. A snow crab is basically a tiny body with giant, spindly legs. They look like spiders. Delicious, buttery spiders.
You’re eating a creature that could walk on stilts. Be grateful.
The Timing Question
When should you eat them? Always. But there’s a season. Snow crab season runs from early spring to late summer. That’s when they’re plump.
Out of season? You get smaller legs. Still tasty. Just less meat. Half a pound in off-season is a tease. You’ll want more.
Frozen legs are totally fine. Snow crabs are flash-frozen right on the boat. It’s fresher than “fresh” at the store. Trust the freezing.
