There are times when you should avoid belly rubs even if your golden retriever usually seems to enjoy them. If your dog recently had surgery, is recovering from illness, or has a noticeable wound, swelling, or skin irritation, belly contact should be off-limits unless your veterinarian has said otherwise.
Pain can also be subtle. Some dogs will still tolerate touch when they’re uncomfortable, especially if they’re people-pleasers. A safer approach is to watch for changes from their normal routine: increased sensitivity, reluctance to lie down, or sudden snapping when touched.
Also consider health factors that aren’t always visible. If your dog shows repeated signs of discomfort—tail tucked, restlessness, or guarding behavior—skip belly rubs and contact a qualified professional for advice.
