Did you know? The runtime almost hit three hours, but a single 2-minute scene was cut that involved a cameo from a certain talking monkey. Also, the film features the first-ever full song for Dr. Dillamond (played by Peter Dinklage). It’s called “The Grass Is Always Greener,” and it’s a heartbreaking showstopper.
Another gem: the “Popular” scene with Ariana Grande’s Glinda was shot in one continuous 14-minute take. That’s longer than most pop songs. And yes, Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba did all her own high notes raw on set—no auto-tune, just pure vocal power.
Finally, the film’s color palette was meticulously desaturated for the first 90 minutes. Just like the musical, everything looks grey and muted until Elphaba discovers her power. When she does, the screen explodes into emerald, gold, and violet. It’s a visual metaphor you’ll feel.
