First, look at the date on the coin. Then, flip it over and read the design. Is it a London 2012 event? A literary character? A scientific discovery?
Next, check the mintage number online. Sites like the Royal Mint’s own list are your best friend. You can also look for the uncirculated condition—coins that look fresh from the factory.
If you find a scratched-up Kew Gardens, it's still worth something, but a pristine one is where the magic happens. Condition really does matter.
Why This is Such a Cool Hobby
Here's the thing—you don't need to be a billionaire to start. It's a treasure hunt that costs exactly 50p per ticket. Every time you check your change, you’re opening a tiny mystery box.
Plus, it connects you to history. That Olympic coin? It was minted to celebrate London 2012. That Sir Isaac Newton coin? It honours a man who helped invent modern science. It’s like holding a little piece of time in your hand.

And let’s be honest, it's way more exciting than checking your bank balance. Which would you rather do—see a boring number or find a coin worth 500 times its face value?
