York at Christmas is so picturesque it’s almost annoying. You know those cheesy Christmas jigsaws? York is that jigsaw, but real. The Shambles – a narrow, cobbled street – gets draped in fairy lights and greenery, and it looks like a fairy-tale diorama. You half expect a Dickensian caroler to tap you on the shoulder and offer you a goose.
The St. Nicholas Fair is a compact, charming market where the local sellers are genuinely enthusiastic. It’s less chaotic than Manchester or London, so you can actually breathe while browsing for wooden toys and artisan gin. Also, York Minster does these incredible candlelit carol services. The acoustics alone are enough to make you believe in the magic of the season – or at least invest in better headphones later.
