Eddie was never supposed to be there. As a kid in Cheltenham, he was a solid skier, but the British team for alpine events was a closed shop. His solution? Switch to ski jumping, a discipline where Great Britain had no team, no funding, and frankly, no hope. For most, that’s a dealbreaker. For Eddie, it was just a Tuesday.
He financed his entire operation by working as a plasterer and sleeping in a Finnish mental hospital because it was cheap. We’re not kidding. He literally lived in an abandoned psychiatric ward to save cash so he could throw himself off a 90-meter ramp. Talk about commitment to the bit.
His equipment was a masterpiece of scruffy ingenuity. Eddie borrowed helmets from strangers, used up to eight pairs of socks to make his boots fit, and had a “uniform” that was basically whatever was clean. He looked like a guy who just wandered into the stadium by accident. And we loved him for it.
