This is my favorite part. On weekends, the daily cap for contactless drops to £6.70 in Zones 1-2. That’s cheaper than the Travelcard. By a whole £1.40.
So buy a Travelcard on a Thursday. Use contactless on a Saturday. You just saved enough for a Freddo. Or two, if you haggle.
The system is a miniature game. You’re not paying for transport. You’re playing a strategy puzzle with the TfL pricing algorithm.
The Annual Indulgence
Want to get really wild? The annual Zone 1-2 Travelcard costs £2,580. That’s twenty-five hundred pounds for the privilege of being stuck in a tunnel at Holborn.
But break it down: that’s £7.07 per day. Cheaper than buying a daily card three times a week. It’s bulk buying for adults, like Costco for commuters.
Is it worth it? Only if you hate decisions. One annual ticket, one less thing to think about. Peace of mind for the price of a used car.
