Now, for the most mind-blowing part: some octopuses have figured out how to carry their own water bottle. Scientists have filmed veined octopuses walking across the seafloor with two halves of a coconut shell, then putting them together to create a portable shelter. But here’s the kicker—they sometimes do this on land at low tide, crawling from one tide pool to another while carrying a sloppy water bubble inside their shell. This buys them extra minutes because they’re basically a walking, eight-legged submarine. It’s like getting a mortgage on a tiny, wet house just so you don’t dry out.

So, Should You Ever Touch One?
If you ever see an octopus on the beach, do not panic, and do not poke it. Your first instinct might be to throw it back in the water, which is a good instinct—but be careful. Octopuses have a beak like a parrot and venom like a snake (not deadly to humans, but it will ruin your day with swelling and pain). Also, they are shockingly strong; one small octopus can hold onto a rock with the force of a bulldog, and you’ll look like a fool tugging on a slimy, angry alien.
Instead, just gently pour some seawater over it and watch it do its little “I’m a pancake now” shuffle back into the ocean. And if you ever want to impress your friends at a party, just say: “An octopus can survive out of water for about as long as you can hold your breath while running a marathon in a desert—not very long, but long enough to make a stupid mistake.” They’ll laugh, they’ll learn, and they’ll never look at calamari the same way again.
So, the final answer? 20 to 40 minutes, give or take a bit of slime and a lot of panic. And remember: the octopus is not trying to be a land animal—it’s just a squishy genius who occasionally makes bad choices. Respect the octopus. It respects the water.
