It was split into two flavors: “contribution-based” (if you’d paid enough National Insurance, you got a bit more) and “income-based” (for those who needed a little extra help). You’d visit the Jobcentre, sign a “jobseeker’s agreement,” and get a weekly payment like clockwork. It was old-school—like using a flip phone in an age of smartphones.
But here’s the kicker: JSA is dying. It’s being phased out, like fax machines and MySpace.
The government decided it was too clunky, too easy to exploit, and didn’t really help people who were sick, self-employed, or working just a few hours a week. So they cooked up something bigger, meaner, and much more complicated.
