First, never assume your usual bus appears. Check your local transit app the night before and save the holiday schedule. I learned this the hard way in Chicago, where I once waited forty minutes for a ghost bus that never arrived.
Second, plan an exit strategy. If your city’s last bus leaves at 8 p.m., know the nearest rideshare pickup spot or a friend’s couch. It’s smart to have a backup plan—like carrying a portable charger and a paper map (old school, but it works when your phone dies).

Fun Little Fact: The Bus That Never Sleeps
Not all buses take the day off. In cities like Las Vegas and New York, some 24-hour routes run even on New Year’s Day. The Las Vegas Strip bus, for instance, runs all night because the party never stops—and neither do the tourists.
In London, the famous red double-deckers operate a Saturday service on New Year’s Day, but with reduced frequency. Meanwhile, Tokyo’s buses run a near-normal schedule because, culturally, January 1st is a major day for shrine visits and family gatherings. Talk about dedication.
