Think of them as portable phone chargers, but for your entire house and they’re the size of a small surfboard. You literally plug them into a standard wall socket using a special cable with an inverter built into it. No electrician, no roof work, no throwing cash at a van with "Solar Bros" written on the side.
The inverter does the heavy lifting—it takes the DC electricity from the panels and turns it into the AC stuff your kettle and telly actually understand. Without it, your plug-in panels would just be very expensive garden ornaments that confuse the cat.
How Does It Actually Work in Your Living Room?
Here’s the magic: when the sun hits your panels on the balcony, the inverter feeds that power directly into your home’s ring main. It’s like having a tiny, invisible sun-powered generator that whispers, "I’ll cover the telly for the next two hours, mate."
Your house doesn’t know the difference. It just uses whatever electricity is easiest—first from your plug-in panels, then from the grid. It’s the electricity equivalent of eating the last biscuit from the tin before you open a new pack. Priorities.
I once watched Dave’s meter literally spin backwards on a sunny afternoon. He cheered so loud his neighbour thought he’d won the lottery. He hadn’t, but he’d just run his washing machine for free. Same vibe.
