Magma isn’t just rock goo. It’s mixed with dissolved gases—mostly water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur. When it erupts, it stinks like rotten eggs because of the sulfur. Volcanoes are basically Earth’s burps after a bad burrito.

Some igneous rocks are weirdly heavy. Peridotite, the rock from the deep mantle, is so dense it sinks in water. It’s literally a rock that thinks it’s a submarine. Geologists find it where continents smacked into each other.
And then there’s pegmatite. It forms when water-rich magma cools at the very, very end. It can grow crystals the size of your arm. You can find giant, six-foot-long feldspar crystals in some mines. It’s like nature got bored and decided to build with Lego blocks the size of your torso.
