Okay, get ready to look a little silly. Knock on the melon. Yes, knock on it. Use your knuckles, give it a good thwack. A ripe honeydew makes a deep, hollow, almost metallic thump. An unripe one sounds like a solid, flat thud. If it sounds like a door, put it down. You want the sound of a gentle drum.
Why does this work? The inside of a ripe melon has slight air pockets from the sugars developing. Unripe melons are dense and watery. You are literally listening for ripeness acoustics. Pretty cool, right? You’re a fruit sommelier now.
The Stem End Tell
Peek at the very top where the stem was attached. If it’s slightly cracked or has a little ring of barely-visible scar tissue, that’s a good sign. It means the melon was left on the vine long enough for the stem to dry and fall off naturally. A perfectly round, clean stem end? That melon was probably yanked off by a machine. Pass.
Also, give the stem end a gentle press. Is it a little soft? Not mushy, but yielding? That’s a yes. Rock hard? That’s a no from me, dawg.
