If you’ve ever stood in the cereal aisle at Asda, debating between own-brand cornflakes and the posh ones, you’ll understand the Grinch’s pain. He’s the voice inside our heads when we see another “Big Night In” offer and think, “Do I really need that?” But instead of buying the veggie box, he goes for the whole ham and a giant tub of Quality Street. It’s the ultimate festive dilemma, and he nails it.
Cumberbatch’s performance is pure gold because he doesn’t play it as a villain. He plays it as a bloke who just wants a quiet Christmas but keeps getting swept up in the chaos. You know that feeling, right? When your to-do list is longer than your arm, and you’re one broken fairy light away from a meltdown? That’s our Grinch.
He’s the guy who begrudgingly puts up the tree, but then spends three hours perfecting the tinsel placement. It’s a relatable struggle, wrapped in green fur and a very famous voice.
Why We Love This Grinch So Much
Let’s be honest: most of us have a bit of the Grinch in us during the holiday season. You’re trying to be jolly, but the traffic is a nightmare, and your nan keeps asking if you’ve wrapped her presents yet. Benedict Cumberbatch gives that feeling a voice. It’s not menacing; it’s perfectly British annoyance.

His delivery of lines like “Oh, for goodness’ sake” is so spot-on it feels like he’s sat next to you in the queue. There’s no shouting, no dramatic villainy—just a quiet, simmering exasperation that we all recognise. It’s the same energy you have when the supermarket runs out of the good stuffing mix.
And the best bit? He eventually gives in. He lets the Christmas spirit win, in the most adorably reluctant way. That’s real. That’s us after we’ve had a glass of Baileys and realised the turkey is actually going to be fine.
