There are even a few sneaky bits. The top floors (above the viewing gallery) are actually empty or used for building equipment. Seriously. They’re just steel and glass and a whole lot of “don’t touch that button.” It’s like the building’s attic, but with a better view of the pigeons.
And the base of The Shard? That’s a train station. London Bridge station is literally built into its bottom. So you can go from commuting to champagne in five minutes. Efficiency or schizophrenia? You decide.
So, What’s the Point?
The Shard is a vertical city. It’s not just one thing. It’s a hotel, an office, a home, a restaurant, a tourist trap, and a doctor’s office all stacked on top of each other like a really ambitious Lego tower. It’s for living, working, playing, and gawking—all at once.
Is it a bit extra? Of course. It’s London. But next time you see it poking the sky, remember: that triangle is doing a lot more than looking pretty. And if you ever get a chance to visit, skip the lunch and just ride the elevator. Your ears will thank you. Or pop. One of the two.
