Instead, lead with something observational. Look around. You’re both at a coffee shop? Say, “I’m judging your drink order. Mine’s a sad black coffee. What’s your power choice?” See? You’ve made a little game. She gets to defend her latte.
Or try: “You look like you’re about to solve a mystery. What’s the case?” It’s playful. It’s unexpected. She’ll either laugh or tell you she’s just buying gum. Either way, you’re in.
