Back in the day, Mexico City was a federal district (Distrito Federal), just like Washington D.C. The government controlled it directly. But in 2016, the city decided to grow up and become its own state-like entity. They changed the name from “Distrito Federal” to “Ciudad de México” and gave it its own constitution. It was a political power move, basically saying, “We don’t need a state to boss us around.”
Now, it has a governor (instead of a mayor), a local congress, and all the trappings of a state. But—and here’s the kicker—it is technically still the seat of the federal government. So it’s a city, a state, and a capital all rolled into one confusing, glorious, chaotic package. I call it the geographical hydra.

Why You Should Care (Besides Avoiding Embarrassment)
Knowing this makes you sound like a super-smart traveler. When a local asks, “Are you staying in Mexico City or the state?”, you can confidently reply, “CDMX, the entity itself.” You’ll instantly gain a tiny bit of street cred. Plus, it helps you understand the incredible diversity of the area.
The vibe of the city (CDMX) is dense, artsy, and full of history. The vibe of the State of Mexico is often more residential, industrial, or natural, with mountains and volcanoes. They are worlds apart, even if they share a border. Your soul belongs in one of them; your stomach will be happy in both.
So, to circle back to my friend Dave: he eventually landed in the right place, but only after I sent him a screenshot with a red circle around “Ciudad de México.” He spent the first hour at the airport explaining to a customs agent that he was, in fact, not lost. The agent just smiled and said, “Sí, gringo, siempre pasa.” (Yes, foreigner, it always happens.)
