Most results come down to technique. The same black-and-brown palette can be airy and lived-in or crisp and graphic, depending on where color is placed and how finely it’s sectioned.
Balayage is a freehand placement method. It tends to produce soft transitions—roots that stay darker, mid-lengths that warm up, and ends that catch the most light.
Foil highlights use aluminum foils to isolate sections. This usually yields more uniform lift and clearer separation, especially when the stylist wants pronounced contrast.
Ribbons or slice highlights are less about overall “sweep” and more about thin, intentional slices of color. When done well, they can create a dimensional effect even on dark hair without turning into heavy streaks.
Which technique suits your goal?
If you want a natural look that grows out gracefully, balayage or soft placement is often the easiest route. If you want obvious, camera-ready definition—especially for straight hair—foil or ribbon techniques can deliver that.
For many people, the best approach is custom blending: darker near the roots, controlled lift in the mid-lengths, and targeted brightness on the ends. That “map” is what turns highlights from just pretty into truly flattering.
