Here’s the deal: Target loves your money. They love it more than you love that first sip of cold brew on a Monday morning. But even they have a soul, buried somewhere between the dollar-spot gnomes and the clearance bins. On Labor Day, they usually open at 8:00 AM and close at 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM locally.
This is a sacred tradition of “we’ll take your money, but we’re also going to make our employees grill hot dogs in the parking lot.” Do not arrive at midnight like a raccoon looking for seasonal candy. You will be disappointed, and the security guard will judge your life choices.
Pro tip: Check your local store’s website or the Target app. I know, I know—work. But trust me, doing this 48 hours before the big day saves you from a tearful drive-through at a closed Target with nothing but a bag of flaming hot Cheetos in your car.
So, Why Even Bother Asking?
Because you’ve been burned before. We all have. Remember that one Fourth of July when you thought CVS was open, but it was actually a mirage made of fireworks and regret? Target is the grown-up store. They rarely close for holidays, except on Christmas Day and Thanksgiving—because even capitalism deserves a nap.

Labor Day is not a full-store shutdown. It’s a “lite” holiday. Think of it as Target’s version of a cheat meal. They’re still open, but the vibe is slightly more relaxed. And the aisles are filled with people wearing red shirts who are surprisingly cheerful for someone working on a holiday.
Now, let’s get into the surprisingly true facts. Did you know that Target was originally called “Dayton’s Dry Goods Company”? Yes. And did you know that Labor Day was created to celebrate the labor movement and the fight for an eight-hour workday? Which means, ironically, you’re going to Target to buy more stuff on a day meant to honor taking a day off. We are a beautiful, confused species.
