Here’s the science, and it’s delightfully weird. A fruit is the part of a plant that develops from a flower’s ovary and contains seeds. By this definition, tomatoes, cucumbers, and even pumpkins are fruits.
That means peppers, eggplants, and avocados are fruits too. Yes, avocados. Your guacamole is basically fruit salad. Mind. Blown.
Botanically, a vegetable is any other edible part of a plant. Roots, stems, leaves, or flowers. Carrots (roots), lettuce (leaves), broccoli (flowers)—those are veggies.
So a fruit is a plant’s delivery system for baby plants. A vegetable is everything else we munch on. Simple, right? Except it’s not.
