So who can order flags to half-staff? The President (for the whole country), Governors (for their state), and Mayors (only for city flags and with a sad wave). Private citizens? You can do it, but please be tasteful. No one wants a half-staff flag for “Game of Thrones” season finale. Unless it was the last season. Okay, maybe that one’s justified.
Next time you see a flag at half-staff, give a little nod. Someone in charge made a choice. Or it’s just Bob being dramatic. Either way, you’re now in the know. Go forth and flag-spot wisely. And maybe buy Bob a coffee. He clearly needs one.
