Let’s zoom out for a sec. The US invaded in March 2003. By April, Baghdad fell. President Bush gave his famous “Mission Accomplished” speech on an aircraft carrier. He wore a flight suit. It was pure theater.
Then the war lasted for eight more years. The “accomplished” part aged like milk left in a hot car. Over 4,000 US soldiers died, and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. Nobody was laughing anymore. But the irony? Oof.
The Intelligence Sausage Factory
How did we get into this mess? Blame bad intelligence. The CIA, MI6, and others used shaky sources. One famous source was “Curveball,” a defector who lied about mobile biological labs. He fabricated the whole story, yet it was presented as fact to the UN.
It’s like trusting a raccoon to guard your trash. Lesson learned: When a guy in a foreign country claims he knows about secret weapons, maybe double-check his previous gig was at a circus.
