Great question! Excel is smart enough to ignore empty cells and text when calculating an average. So if you skipped a week of grocery shopping, or a student was absent, your average won’t freak out—it just uses the numbers you gave it.
But watch out for zeros! A zero is still a number, so it will drag your average down. If you meant to skip a cell, leave it truly blank, don’t type the number zero.
