Alright, let’s get real for a second. RO systems aren’t perfect. They are a bit wasteful. For every gallon of clean water you get, they usually send 3 or 4 gallons down the drain as “reject” water.
That sounds terrible, I know. But think of it this way: that waste water is basically just extra-concentrated tap water. It’s not toxic sludge; it’s just the water that carried away all the bad stuff.
Newer systems are getting way better about this. Some models now have a 1:1 ratio. That’s one gallon wasted for one gallon of pure joy. Progress!
What About All Those Minerals?
You’ll hear people say, “But RO removes the good minerals too!”. And they’re right. It strips out calcium and magnesium along with the bad stuff.
Here’s the thing: you don’t get your minerals from water. You get them from food. Eating a single banana gives you more potassium than drinking a swimming pool’s worth of mineral water. So don’t let that scare you.
If you’re really worried, you can buy a system with a remineralization filter. It adds a tiny bit of calcium back in right before the water hits your glass. Problem solved.
