So, how did Derek Shepherd die? He died because he was a hero. He died because of a distracted driver and incompetent doctors. But most of all, he died because Grey’s Anatomy needed a new chapter.
The final image we have is of Meredith saying goodbye. It was raw, unromantic, and deeply unfair. And yet, it’s exactly why we keep watching this damn show. Because it reminds us that life can change in the time it takes to answer a text.
Personally, I still blame the guy driving the truck. And the small-town radiologist. And maybe the scriptwriters who didn’t give us a proper funeral scene. But mostly, I just remember that Derek Shepherd died as he lived—saving other people, while totally failing to save himself.
