Elena Cabral

 

 

Elena Cabral is a mother and a writer who teaches at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Elena has a long history of writing about remarkable Latinas, including a profile of boxer Patricia Alcivar for VIBE magazine, and a feature for NPR on a competitive soccer league of Latin-American players in New York City.

Her magazine work has also appeared in PODER, Marie Claire and Commonweal. Elena was an associate editor and contributor to Scholastic News, where her coverage of immigration policy earned the magazine an Association of Educational Publishers Award in 2008.

Elena was a staff writer at The Miami Herald, where her beats included several South Florida cities and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. She contributed to the coverage of Elián Gonzalez, the 2000 Presidential ballot count, and several other breaking stories. Prior to this, she was a staff writer at the Ford Foundation’s quarterly magazine, the FF Report, which highlighted the work of innovators around the world. Her work for the magazine included stories about teacher training on the Navajo reservation, domestic violence and women in the Mexican workforce. Her overseas assignments included a piece on AIDS in Brazil, a feature on human rights work in Argentina and a report on local government initiatives in the Philippines.

She lives in New York City with her husband and two children.
