Sometimes we do things without thinking of the consequences to our health and our homes. Many times, we justify our actions because we believe we are choosing the easiest or most economical way. This might mean you purchase an item without really considering what ingredients it contains, or it could mean you throw away a piece of furniture because you have no use for it, or so you think. It’s So Easy Being Green helps you make decisions that are good for you and your world AND are also easy to do and won’t break the bank. I have always been aware of the wealth of natural resources in my native country of Puerto Rico: the beach, the mountains, the rivers, it is la isla del encanto after all. I am constantly reprimanding relatives and friends when I see them throw a soda can in the trash instead of a recyclables canister or purchase cleaning supplies with harsh chemicals instead of products that won’t affect their family’s health.
Our ancestors were taught to cherish nature as a source of beauty and life. I remember all of those home remedies created by my Abuela from the herbs in her garden. When I had a headache or cough, rarely did I take anything from a bottle. I have vivid memories of my Abuela making chicken stew from the chicken she raised in the backyard. Some of it was not pretty! There was very little she did not keep and utilize in one way or another. Luckily, I don’t have to resort to these measures, and yes, I can simply purchase my chicken at the store. However, the idea, that nothing should be wasted and that the land gives us so much and we should give back, is constant.
This isn’t my Abuela’s era and with our busy and ever changing lifestyles, we have new challenges. It’s So Easy Being Green provides tips and suggestions on how to be more environmentally friendly and conscious of what you do, and we keep it simple. Little steps go a long way!
