Editor’s Note: We’re celebrating 30 Days of Beauty to help you get ready for all of those holiday parties. Prizes or discounts will be awarded randomly, so you won’t want to miss a day!
Not to brag or anything, but Cuban-Americans have really got it going on. Take Oribe Canales, the handsome, mega-tattooed hair stylist so famous he and we go by his first name only. The 55-year-old Cuban-born artista is renowned for Big Hair, but lately he’s also embracing Good Hair. Which means full, lustrous, touchable, easy, and slightly (but perfectly) imperfect. His one-name celebrity clients like Penélope, Salma, and JLo are ideal examples.
Oribe has created an eponymous line of luxurious, high-performance, beautifully packaged, insanely great-smelling styling products that my hair and I now cannot live without. I may need a second job, but I don’t care.
I recently tried three products that would be simply amazing at any time of year, but I think especially now, with no humidity, a need for speed, and late-night parties—these will really rock your world, no matter what you want to do with your holiday hair.
One caveat: With products this well made, you do NOT need a lot. Au contraire, I myself overdid it the first time I tested them, and while my hair was still gorgeous, it was also kind of a hot mess. Okay, it was kind of a hot gorgeous mess, but there was no need for That Much Product. Once I got the hang of less-is-more (always an anathema to me), I got a TON of compliments in return and my hair was thrilled.
Maximista Thickening Spray ($26)
My curly-wavy hair is actually pretty thin, but I have a lot of it and it’s layered, so I can make it look plump and pretty. However, when the humidity drops, so does my bounce and volume. My hair just sort of droops. It’s very sad. After towel-drying my freshly shampooed and conditioned hair, I lightly sprayed Maximista from the roots to the ends, concentrating on the crown. Then I blow-dried the you-know-what out of it with a diffuser attachment on the dryer’s hottest setting. Were those weeping angels I heard? Gor-geous, thick fullness, body, and shine. I was delivered from winter limp locks! Gracias, Oribe. You understand Thick.
Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray ($35)
Next I applied Après Beach (part of the reason I over-sprayed the first time was because I was so intoxicated by the fragrance that I think I wanted to use it as a perfume, too.) I just sprayed it lightly all over, tousled and scrunched my hair with my fingers (good messy, remember), and suddenly I was transported to Malibu, where I shot an al fresco ad with my two adorable toddlers for Gucci. Oh. That was actually JLo with Emme and Max. Whatever. I was there in my mind. Shine for days, zero frizz, total beachy wavy un-crunchy ease and separation in two seconds. Even the otherwise (seemingly) oblivious BF said my hair looked beautiful. And then he grabbed a handful so he could feel it. And then he put his face in it so he could smell it. Gracias, Oribe. You understand Sexy.
Finally, I applied—with a VERY, VERY, VERY light hand—this crazy-great stuff that turned my palms gold (like the Tin Man, except desirable) and my holiday hair into ultimate, dazzling, golden-flecked Oribe-osity. You might’ve seen pomade before, but you’ve never seen anything like this.
24K Gold Pomade ($49)
This is paraben-free golden hair makeup: It highlights highlights, highlights no highlights, and gives hair dimension and brilliance with crushed minerals like mica. It also tames flyaways, has a sun protectant, and nourishes and strengthens hair with Pro-Vitamin B5. Devastating. Gracias, Oribe. You understand Makeup.
